Flashback Arrestor
A flashback arrestor is a safety device used in gas welding, cutting, and heating systems (like oxy-acetylene setups). Its main job is to stop a flame from traveling backward into hoses, regulators, or gas cylinders—something that can cause serious accidents or explosions.
How it works
A flashback arrestor typically performs three protective functions:
- Flame arresting: It extinguishes any flame trying to move backward.
- Non-return (check valve): It prevents gas from flowing in the wrong direction.
Why it’s important
Without a flashback arrestor, a “flashback” (flame moving back into the system) can:
- Damage equipment
- Ignite hoses or regulators
- Cause explosions in gas cylinders
Where it’s used
- Oxy-acetylene welding and cutting systems
- Oxy-propane setups
- Industrial gas systems
Types / placement
- Torch-mounted arrestors: Attached at the torch handle
- Regulator-mounted arrestors: Installed at the regulator outlets
- Best practice is often to use both for maximum safety
Simple way to think about it
It acts like a one-way safety gate for flames and gas, ensuring everything flows in the correct direction—and nothing dangerous comes back.
